Report No. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic literature review of clinical trials to assess the comparative effectiveness of treatments for fibromyalgia in subgroups of highly affected or clinically complex adults. We focused on patient subgroups rather than overall treatment effects to complement a large systematic review being conducted on fibromyalgia treatments at McMaster University.
Kim H, et al. Arthritis Care Res. The presence of fibromyalgia, as well as an increase in the number of fibromyalgia symptoms, can predict a worsening functional status for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, according to a study published in Arthritis Care and Research.
Background: : Variance in pain after total knee and hip arthroplasty may be due to a number of procedural and peripheral factors but also, in some individuals, to aberrant central pain processing as is described in conditions like fibromyalgia. To test this hypothesis, the authors conducted a prospective, observational cohort study of patients undergoing lower-extremity joint arthroplasty. Methods: : Five hundred nineteen patients were preoperatively phenotyped using validated self-reported pain questionnaires, psychological measures, and health information.
People with fibromyalgia may be more sensitive to pain than people without fibromyalgia. This is called abnormal pain perception processing. The cause of fibromyalgia is not known, but it can be effectively treated and managed. Some other factors have been weakly associated with onset of fibromyalgia, but more research is needed to see if they are real.
